Default "No hard disk" error on XP install for Lenovo T61 laptop

I have a Lenovo brand, model T61 laptops, I want load XP Pro on the my laptop, I figured that I would just insert an XP Pro CD in at boot and boot to disc and then reformat it and be on my way. When I get to the part in the XP setup where you choose the drive partitions to delete/create, etc. the setup says "no hard drive was detected on your system". I know the hard drive not failure. I changed the boot order to boot to hard disk first, restarted and then Vista loads and I get onto the desktop with start menu and everything. why install XP can get this message that No hard disks?
